Honorary Life Member – Shetland

James Johnston has been a central figure in the growth and professionalisation of the International Island Games Association (IIGA), bringing a wealth of administrative expertise and a deep passion for sport. His journey with the IIGA began as General Team Manager for Shetland in the 1991 Games on the Faroe Islands, where he embraced the spirit of international and friendly competition. This experience inspired him to dedicate himself to the Association’s leadership, culminating in his election to the Executive Committee in 1999 and his appointment as Vice Chair in 2007. With his sharp mind and commitment to excellence, Johnston played an essential role in guiding the IIGA towards greater stability, professionalism, and global recognition. His leadership was particularly significant in the development of the partnership with NatWest International, which helped secure the long-term sustainability of the Games.

Athletic Background and Sporting Involvement

  • Johnston’s passion for sport has been lifelong and wide-ranging, encompassing football, squash, and many other disciplines, as well as regular fitness and training.

  • His personal experience across such a variety of activities gave him a unique understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing athletes within the IIGA.

Leadership and Service to the IIGA (1991-2025)

  • 1989, Faroe Islands: General Team Manager for Shetland, taking responsibility at an early stage of the Games.

  • 1991, Åland: General Team Manager for Shetland, fuelling his lasting commitment to the movement.

  • 1999, Gotland: Elected to the Executive Committee of the IIGA, marking the beginning of 25 years of service at the heart of the Association.

  • 2007, Rhodes: Took on the role of Vice Chair of the Executive Committee, a position he held with distinction, helping steer the Association through an era of expansion and increased professionalism.

  • 2007-2023: As Vice Chair, Johnston was instrumental in bringing structure and organisation to an association originally built on dedication and goodwill. His leadership helped strengthen governance, foster unity among member islands, and secure key partnerships, most notably with NatWest International.

  • 2023-2024: James Johnston took the step down from Vice Chair to ordinary Member of the EC, giving space for Andrew Inkster to become Vice Chair.

  • 2025: Recognised for his outstanding service and commitment, Johnston was unanimously elected Honorary Life Member of the IIGA, by the Annual General Meeting.
