Orkney Amateur Swimming Club started off the term with something new this year to prepare our swimmers for the NatWest Island Games in Jersey next year. A full day of training and team building activities were held on the 23rd. August 2014 at Stromness Swimming pool and Stromness Academy. A-squad swimmers from both the Kirkwall and Stromness branches took part in two 90-min pool sessions, land training, and team building activities. Along with Orkney coaches Bobby Oag and Ian Johnstone, the club was delighted to welcome visiting coach Pétur Pétursson from Lerwick Swim Team, Shetland who led some of the pool sessions, and gave a motivational talk to the swimmers in the afternoon session. Breakfast and lunch was also provided, giving further opportunities for discussion on healthy and appropriate nutrition for competitive swimming. A huge thank-you to Pétur for travelling down from Shetland for the weekend. Thanks also to Fiona Towrie for the physio talk and exercises, to Grace Smith for preparing all the food, and to all the parents who helped throughout the day. The training day was supported by a grant from the NatWest Sports Development Programme administered by the International Island Games Association.
