IIGA Executive Committee Meeting in FROYA & HITRA - March 2015

The Executive Committee of the International Island Games Association (IIGA) met in Frøya and Hitra from 6-9 March 2015 for their annual spring meeting.
The NatWest Island Games in Jersey will start on 27th June 2015 and will be the largest Games since the first one in the Isle of Man in 1985. All together 3.500 competitors, managers, supporters and media will be in Jersey for a full week of sport.

Frøya and Hitra are Norwegian Islands, two of the 24 member islands that form the Association. During the meeting the IIGA met up with local IGA-boards and political leaders. IIGA-chairman Jörgen Pettersson commented:
”Every member of the International Island Games Association is as important as the others. Size does not matter. It was refreshing to see the dedication in Frøya and Hitra for the NatWest Island Games and comforting to discover the will from the politicians to invest in the future of the islands by supporting participation in the Games.”
During the meeting it was confirmed that the partnership between IIGA and titlesponsor NatWest that started in 1998 will continue for the following three games: Jersey 2015, Gotland 2017 and Menorca 2019.
From 2021 onwards four member islands have already shown interest to become a Host: Guernsey, Orkney, Isle of Man and Ynys Mon. The Executive Committee will work together with these islands to plan the future games.
Apart from organising the biennial NatWest Island Games the IIGA and NatWest also contribute towards sports development projects within the Member Islands. During 2014 the NatWest Sports Development Programme approved 18 applications from 10 Member Islands totalling £12,000 . Since it’s inception in 1998 the NatWest Sports Development Programme has contributed over £150,000 to develop sport in the member islands.
