Owen Le Vallee Honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award
Publication Date: Mon, 06 Feb 2012
Owen Le Vallee MBE was honoured for his services to Guernsey sport with a special Lifetime Achievement Award by the Guernsey Sports Commission at their 2011 Sporting Achievement Gala held on 18th January.
This will come as no surprise to those of us involved with the NatWest Island Games and the International Island Games Association. We have all seen just how hard Owen has worked over the years for sport and to help make our Games the great success it is today. He began his 'Games career' as the founder Chairman of the Guernsey Island Games Association (IGA) attending the first 'Inter Island Games' in 1985 in the Isle of Man where he was elected Vice Chairman of the Island Games Association Executive Committee at its first Annual General Meeting. He was subsequently Chairman of the Organising Committee for the 1987 Island Games, made an Honorary Life Member of the IGA in 1989 and elected Treasurer in 1993, serving until his retirement in 2011. During this time he made many invaluable contributions to the development of the Association.
Following the presentation Owen said he was privileged to be rewarded for doing something he loves:
"For it to be considered that my hobby is worthy of a Lifetime Achievement Award is incredible. I am honoured to receive the award, but so much of what has been achieved could not have been possible without the support of various officials. I have been extremely lucky that sport has enabled me to travel the world and make lifetime friends, one of whom, Jorgen has presented me with this award."
IIGA Chairman Jorgen Pettersson said he was delighted to have been invited to the Awards night by the Chairman of the Guernsey Sports Commission Mr Stuart Falla, (previously Chairman of the Organising Committee for the NatWest Island Games in Guernsey in 2003) and particularly to have been able to present this special award to Owen.
