Press Release

On Your Marks, Get Set for the Island Games - 2015

Publication Date: Tue, 16 Feb 2010

On Monday 15th February the competition between Gotland and Jersey to become the Host Island for the Island Games XVI 2015 officially got underway with the distribution of their Bid Documents.   The final decision will be taken at the Annual General Meeting of the International Island Games Association to be held in the Isle of Wight on 27th June 2010.  The Membership - each of the 25 Member Island Associations has 2 votes, together with the Executive Committee - each of the 6 Members has one vote, will decide whether the right to Host the 2015 Games will be awarded to Gotland or Jersey.

The Members of the International Island Games Association will meet next in the Isle of Wight later this year but not only for the AGM.  As the NatWest Island Games XIV will take place on the Isle of Wight in 2011 the Organising Committee has invited the Member Islands to their island to see the sports venues and their plans for accommodating the teams as well as further information about the build-up to their Games.  The NatWest Island Games XIV - Isle of Wight is likely to be the largest multi-sport event in Great Britain next year.  Several of the organisers of the London Olympics 2012 will liaise with the 2011 Games organisers.

The Games have, since their inception in 1985, brought islanders together in friendly competition and will cross the Atlantic for the first time when Bermuda hosts the 2013 Games.
